Stay safe until we arrive

  • Keep children and pets out of the affected area.
  • Stop using sinks, toilets, showers and the washing machine. Every drain you use can push more sewage back into the house.
  • Don't walk through sewage or try to mop it up yourself.
  • Stay out of standing water near outlets, cords or appliances.
  • If it's safe, take photos from a dry spot for your records.

A plumber or septic company clears the blockage or repairs the line. We handle the cleanup, drying and repairs to your home.

Why sewage cleanup is different

The IICRC, the industry's standards body, classifies sewage as Category 3 water. It carries bacteria and other contaminants that soak into porous materials. That changes how the job is done:

  • Crews work in protective equipment, and the work area is contained so contamination doesn't spread to clean rooms.
  • Porous materials that sewage has soaked, like carpet and pad, drywall and insulation, are removed and bagged rather than dried in place.
  • Hard surfaces and framing are cleaned and treated before drying starts.
  • Moisture readings confirm the structure is dry before repairs begin.

Our sewage cleanup process

  1. Assess. We find where the sewage traveled, including under flooring and into wall cavities, and explain the scope before work starts.
  2. Contain and extract. We set up containment, remove standing sewage and remove affected porous materials.
  3. Clean and treat. Remaining surfaces and framing are cleaned and treated with an antimicrobial.
  4. Dry. Air movers and dehumidifiers dry the structure, checked with moisture readings.
  5. Repair. We put back the drywall, insulation, flooring, trim and paint, so you deal with one company start to finish.

Common causes we see

  • Main sewer line blockages from roots or grease
  • Toilet overflows that run through the floor to the ceiling below
  • Septic systems backing up after heavy rain, common in rural Skagit and Whatcom County
  • Basement floor drains backing up during river flooding
  • Crawlspaces where a broken drain line has been leaking unseen

Insurance documentation

We document sewage jobs with photos, moisture readings, a scope of work and Xactimate estimates when applicable, and we can share them with your adjuster. Coverage for sewer backup depends on your policy, and your insurer decides it. Ask your agent whether you have sewer or water backup coverage.

Frequently asked questions

Can I clean up a small sewage backup myself?

We don't recommend it. Even a small backup can soak into flooring and drywall where you can't see it, and handling it without protective gear is a health risk. Call us to talk it through.

Do you fix the sewer line?

No. A plumber or septic company clears the line or repairs the pipe. We clean, sanitize, dry and repair the damage to your home. Let us know whether the source has been fixed when you call.

Can I stay in my home during sewage cleanup?

It depends on where the sewage is and how much of the home is affected. We'll tell you what we recommend once we see the damage.

How long does sewage cleanup take?

Removal and cleaning are often done in a day or two. Drying usually takes several more days, depending on the materials and how far the water spread.

Is sewer backup covered by insurance?

Many policies treat it separately from a burst pipe. Your insurer decides coverage. We provide the documentation your adjuster needs.
